A process for converting coal and/or its related products to liquid and/or gaseous fuels incl. the steps of treating the coal and/or its related products with hydrogen and/or product gas in a first stage under conditions suitable to cause hydrogenation and then treating the hydrogenated products with hydrogen and/or product gas in a second stage under conditions suitable to cause hydrocracking.
