A reciprocating piston compressor has suction and discharge valve which are worked automatically by the difference in pressure across them. Each valve is made as a flat or shaped plate such that the area exposed to gas on the higher pressure side is equal to the area exposed to gas on the lower pressure side. The plate is arranged to obtain this relationship whilst an adequate area is maintained for the valve to seat on. The near equality of the areas reduces the pressure difference necessary to open the valves and thus eliminates the excess work normally needed to open them.
