The vertically descending and automatically deploying guardrail is mounted at the free end of a cantilevering folding parallelogram frame and constitutes an accessory to a basculine cantilever footbridge. The footbridge is mounted on a raised platform, may be utilised at depots where tank-lorries are filled with petrol, and gives access to the top of the tanks for filling purposes. The guard rail prevents personnel from falling off the tank. The guard rail is offset laterally relative to the bridge and they come to rest straddling the longitudinal central line of e.g. an oval section tank. The guard rail and bridge mountings are counter-weighted for controlled descent and are connected by a piston cylinder type sliding coupling. The coupling accommodates a level differential between the free ends of the bridge and the guard rail when they come to rest on the tank.
