The container has hollow base (7) on which the lid fits. The base has a compartment (12) to receive, for example, a cosmetic product. The compartment is sealed by a flexible elastically deformable suction member (15). Compartment (12) has a skirt (14) the upper edge of which is turned outwardly to provide a location in which member (15) is secured by adhesive. On closing the lid (6) a partial vacuum is created within the container causing member (15) to seal against the smooth peripheral edge of the lid. The vacuum is broken by depressing edge (16) of member (15).
