The print head (1) is driven along a print line (B) by a mechanism producing pulses corresponding to successive positions reached along the line. These pulses control energisation of the print head so that characters are printed in the correct positions along the line irrespective of the speed of movement of the head along the line. The head may have a column of print needles (2), successive columns of dots being printed on every Nth position pulse. N may be varied to change the font. The printer is controlled by a processor and may print ON line from signals received from a remote source or in LOCAL mode from an associated keyboard.
