The display device has windows lying one next to the other for the representation of in each case one alphanumeric character. In each window there are individual window segments, which together in each case form one information character. For each of these window segments there is a finite band (66, 68, 70, 72) which on its front and rear side bears in each case individual sections of the possible alphanumeric characters. By controlling the position of the individual bands, the individual sections pass into the window and produce the desired character. The bands are each fastened to a driven roller (74) and are passed over two pairs of guide rollers (78, 82; 84, 86) in such a manner that, using one pair, the front side of the band is displayed and, using the other pair, the rear side of the band is displayed. The other end of the band is fastened to a driven roller (76). By this means, any desired numbers and letters can be quickly and simply combined, with the result that the selection of existing information items can be made significantly larger than would be possible using bands with fixed individual information items.
