A shielded transportation and/or storage container for radioactive waste, esp. spent nuclear fuel elemtns, is of cast iron, for example spheroidal cast iron and comprises side wall, top closure and bottom. The top closure fits with a flange and seating into the top of the side wall and the side wall contains longitudinal ducts containing a moderating material. Used as a transportation coffin for radioactive waste, designed to satisfy the requirement of being dropped from a height of 9 m onto a hard surface without losing its safety containment capability. The addition of radial projecting flanges prevents damage to external cooling ribs, and in partic. prevents damage in the region of the top closure and valves, which could lead to leaks in these regions after such an impact.
