The system dams currents of liquid with exposed surfaces, e.g. in rivers, canals etc. The inside of a weir body of flexible material at right angles to the current communicates with the surface water and is arched upwards by it. The amount of arching of the body (6) is controlled depending on changing flow conditions of the surface water, both the static and kinetic energy being used, while the inlet for the water into the body (11) faces at least partly upstream. There can be a continuous flow through the body by the surface water to the deeper water, flow preferably taking place over it at the same time.
