Selective condensation of vapours contaminated by a volatile component into stream of relatively pure condensate and a more contaminated one is achieved using flat heat transfer elements, irrigated with coolant over their outer surface. The vapour enters via a branch at the base and flows through a bank of elements leaving via a duct at the top. The vapours then flow along the duct to a second bank of elements alongside the first and down through these. The less volatile component condenses in the first bank while a mixt. condenses in the second. Vent gases leave from the base of the second bank. Used for condensing vapour mixts. in which a vapour is contaminated with a more volatile impurity e.g. in pulp and paper industry for condensate recovery. Allows a satisfactory sepn. of two fractions, only one of which is rich in the more volatile components.
