The seal is formed by walls with a short length, which are welded onto the baseplate of a furnace or container in which materials are placed for heating or annealing. Each wall consists of a plate which has a curved end forming a chamber with the straight end of the next plate; and the chambers are filled with a heat resistant stuffing or pad forming a sand tight joint between the plates. One pref. design of plate has a semicircular bend at one end. The sand seal is made from only one or two standard parts which are free to expand and contract with temp. variations.
