The measurement and scanning device is partic. for use in machine tool mfg. processes, enables machine tools with continuous and discontinuous profiles, to be made in a single-stage production process also enabling enlargement and reduction. The co-ordinates of a point on a reference surface and the derivative of the polynomial describing the surface are determined and the profile tested in the direction of the polynomial. In a three axis system a signal generator produces its highest concentration of normally distributed electromagnetic energy at the measurement point. Defocussing produces lower energy densities than for a normal distribution in front of and behind the measurement point. The sensor determines the highest density point and the defocussing rate. The measured variation function is compared with a reference to determine the relative profile.
