The lower bearing faces of a sliding saddle are wider than the upper faces. An adjustable setting piece is fitted beneath one of the latter to eliminate play between the saddle and the rail. The sides of the saddle are thick at the min. cross-section to provide stiffness. This reduces chatter when the saddle is used in lathes and other machines.
