A transparent article is checked for the presence of contaminents (a bottle for the presence of a cap or stopper or of scum) by passing a pulsed illumination by diffused light through it from the bottom to a t.v. camera. The image is scanned and signals corres. to the chord length are compared with desired values. In case of a discrepancy a fault signal is produced. This method is sensitive enough to detect even the presence of minor spots on the bottom or sides of a bottle.
