The vehicle has its engine cooled by a liquid that circulates through a heat exchanger. A fan flows air over the heat exchanger thereby warming the passenger compartment. The liquid is pumped through the heat exchanger and the engine and is switched on when the engine is stationary. The pump is only switched on when the following minimum conditions are met: the engine has been switched off by its control circuit; the vehicles passenger compartment heating has been switched on; and the fan has been switched on. Two pumps may be provided: one for engine cooling and the other for the heat exchanger.
