A function generator (21) produces a signal proportional to engine load as measured by air flow and speed transducers. Its output is fed into a store (24). A further function generator (22) produces a constant signal whose modular value is at least twice the modular value of the load generator signal (21). This generator (22) is connected to the store (24) by a switch (23). The first generator increases the signal held in the store and the second generator reduces it. The output of the store is connected to a logic circuit (25) which produces the timing signal (tp) and also operates the switch (23) between the second generator and the store.
