The fluid under examination is introduced into a vessel such that its level falls at a constant rate. Two electrodes at different levels detect this rate of change. The vessel also contains an open capillary tube and a two further electrodes at the same level, one inside and one outside the capillary tube to detect the delay in the change of level produced by the capillary action. Other surface tension effects can be used in place of the capillary tube. Electronic circuitry is required to produce the output signal and is capable of relating the measurement to the concentration, the viscosity of or similar characteristics of the fluid.
