Distribution plate for fluidised bed type furnace has an array of air distribution pipes fed from a plenum chamber. These are short stand pipes with a set of holes near the end. The bed also has a several slightly higher pipes connected to combustion chambers for preheating air. Air for these second jets is fed across the face of the bed which warms it. The air then flows down into the combustion chamber where it is heated by an oil or gas burner. The remainder of the air serves to burn the main fuel in the bed. For combustion of solid of liq. fuels in fluidised beds. Reduces the amt. of air necessary at the start of the process to expand the bed, reduces tendency to distort plates due to thermal expansion, since preheated air need not be fed through all nozzles, and allows gaseous or liq. fuels to be used for start-up.
