The boiler comprises a vessel with two chambers separated by a perforated plate, the solar energy heat exchanger being in the lower one, and the electric or other heater in the upper one. There can be a top outlet from the vessel for the hot water, and separate return inlets in top and bottom, to which the water is directed by a selector unit. An electronic regulator can be provided, automatically directing the water to the electric heater if the temperature is insufficient to heat the building. The solar heating section can shut off automatically when heat from this source is too low.
