Water soluble acetylated glucopeptides (I) are prepd. from lysed Pseudomonas aeruginosa cells. They have a molecular weight between 500 and 200,000 and contain =20% buiretogenic material and =25% neutral monosaccharides. (I) contains no diaminopimelic acid and has UV absorption maxima at 210 and 260 mu. Glucoproteins of mol. wt. 300,000 extracted from Lysed P. aeruginosa are submitted to acetolysis, usually with a mixt. of acetic anhydride, acetic acid, and sulphuric acid. The crude acetylated prod. is treated with an organic solvent, such as chloroform, and the aq. phase undergoes diafiltration using a porous membrane which retains material of mol. wt. 500. The soln. not passing the membrane contains (I).
