Large alpha-numeric illuminated display - uses sixteen segments covered by blanking sections driven by microprocessor controlled motors

The illuminated alpha numeric display is used at stations, airports or on motorways to provide graphic and other information. It comprises a rectangular shaped enclosure (100) having a transparent front protection plate (110) behind which are front (120) and rear (130) diffusing panels containing sixteen segments. The panels are supported by sleeves (180) and a fluorescent tube (170) makes the segments visible. A number of blanking sections (9a, 16a) covering the segments on each panel are driven by motors (9m, 16m) via arms (142, 152) which control a pin (144, 154). These pins are guided by slots (9f, 16f) which are sufficiently large to avoid friction effects. The motors comprise electromagnetic assemblies whose coils are powered via electronic switches whose coding is controlled from a microprocessor to obtain the required symbols.
