The vigilance of a driver or guard is monitored by a safety system which emits control signals which require the person to perform a given function within a time limit. A random programmer (1) emits a random seuqnce of control (s) signals which are connected to a yellow lamp (4). A second output signal (S') is applied to a red lamp (5) while a third signal (X) controls the audible alarm (7) with changing frequency to wake up the person. This signal requires a contrl pedal (8) to be pressed to control a generator (9). If the pedal is not pressed a timer (11) operates to actuate the four flashing warning lights (12) on the vehicle. A speed sensor (15) and comparator (14) ensures tha the vehicle speed is maintained within limits.
