A process for the preparation of a novel, pharmacologically active alkaloid, namely, N-methyl-cocculinium hydroxide of the formula 1 shown in the accompanying drawings from plants belonging to the Manispermaceae family, which comprises extracting plants belonging to the Manispermaccae family with a solvent such as herein described, separating the extract in a known manner such as herein described, concentrating and drying the extract in a known manner such as herein described and purifying the extract in a known manner such as herein described to obtain the said N-methyl- cocculinium hydroxide.
