A process for polymerising .alpha.-olefins with improved yields is disclosed which uses a novel catalyst composition comprising a solid halogencontaining titanium catalyst component and an organometallic compound of a metal of Group I, II or III of the periodic table. The halogen-containing titanium catalyst component is obtained by reacting a mechanically copulverized solid product in the absence of mechanical pulverization with a titanium compound which is liquid under the reaction conditions. The mechanically copulverised solid product is derived from a magnesium compound, an organic acid ester and an active hydroger-containing compound selected from alcohols and phenols.
