The inclinometer, in one form, consists of a base framework (9) fixed by four corner bolts (8) to the object whose inclination is to be measured, which may be a drilling rig or floating platform or caisson. Magnetic coils (13) measure the relative angles (d) of a pendulous mass (11) suspended by an axle (12). Additionally, there is a housing (18) with a gymbal bearing (20) mounted for rotation about an X-X axis and carrying a spindle for a gyroscope rotating at a high speed (e.g. 24000 revs/min) and driven by an electromotor with internal stator (34). The axle for the gymbal bearing also supports a magnetic core (23) carrying a torsion rod (22) on the other side. These components enable angular deflection and correction signals to be transferred to a calculator. The inclinometer also operates in conjunction with a depth gauge.
