Removal of Fe, enriched in organic liq.-liq. extn. phases contg. di-(2-ethylhexy)-phosphoric acid, (I) takes place in 3 steps. (1) the organic phase, contg. (I) and Fe, is contacted directly with an acid aq. soln. of chloride ions. (2) Fe is extd. from regenerating liq. by contact with an organic soln. contg. an anion exchanger. Fe-Freed regenerating liq. can be re-used in first step. (3) Fe is extd. from anion exchanger-contg. organic phase by treatment with water and removed from system as a concn. aq. soln. of FeCl3. (I) is used as cation exchanger in extn. of hexavalent U from sulphate solns. in sepn. of U and V, sepn. and purificn. of rare earths, sepn. of Co, and Ni, extn. of Be from sulphate solns. sepn. of Zn, Fe, Mn and Co.
