1498606 Removing SO 3 from plant exhaust gas; scrubber STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO 20 Feb 1976 [21 Feb 1975] 06761/76 Headings B1L and B1R Sulphur trioxide gas is removed from the exhaust gas of a sulphuric acid plant by treating the exhaust gas in an absorber and/or scrubber and passing it through a mist eliminator in a tank and when the mist eliminator is overloaded spraying liquid sulphuric acid onto its outer surface to absorb SO 3 . In Fig. 1, exhaust gas is introduced at 10 and passes through the mist eliminators 5 and out of the tank at 11. When excess SO 3 enters, sulphuric acid is pumped through conduit 13 and spray nozzles 31-38. The mist eliminators conventionally comprise a packed fibre bed between two screens which may be concentric cylindrical or parallel flat screens.
