AbstractAcid or base species concentrations inaqueous sample solutions are determined in thepresence of interfering ionic salts. Concentrationof acid or base species is determined by a flowinjection method combined with differential con-ductivity detection and ion-exchange derivatizationwherein the acid or base species is derivatizedto water or absorbed and blended indistinguishablyinto an aqueous carrier phase, and wherein the inter-fering salt(s) is derivatized in whole or in partto a distinguishable hydroxide or acid derivative(s).In a detector read-out, the calibrated peak of a con-ductimeteric response of the salt derivative(s) iscompared to the peak of a conductimetric response ofthe sample solution and the response differential isdisplayed and used to determine the acid or basespecies concentration. The salt(s) concentration isdetermined since it is proportional to the first men-tioned peak. The technique has utility with respectto acids and bases and most advantageously to strongand moderately strong acids and bases of PKa and PKbvalue, respectively, of less than 2.
