Mixture of a volatile silicon cpd. (pref. SiCl4) and a volatile titanium cpd. (pref. TiCl4) with an oxidising gas (pref. O2) or a hydrolysing gas mixt. (pref. H2 and CO2) is introduced into the fame of an induction plasma burner and the resulting doped quartz glass is deposited in the form of a rod. This rod is then immersed in molten quartz glass prepd. in the manner described above (but without addition of TiCl4) to form an undoped sheath. By this method, high-purity quartz glass is produced. A nearly defect-free boundary between the core and the sheath is formed so that light-scattering is reduced to minimum and light can be conveyed nearly without losses.
