Analogue-digital converter with two quantising devices - uses first quantising device for coarse range, and second for fine range

The first quantising device compares the analogue input signal with a number of coarse amplitude ranges, and delivers a digital output signal describing the coarse range into which the input signal falls. There is a subtractor which determines the difference between the analogue input signal and the coarse step to which the above range corresponds and the second quantising device delivers an output signal describing the above difference; a device signals when the subtractor signal exceeds a range limited by the coarse range, and generates a corresponding correction or error signal. The signalling device input is connected to the second quantising device.
