Grinding tool binder contg. (a) Cu: (b) a metal with low m.pt.; (c) a metal in the iron sub-gp. of gp. VIII and (d) =1 Ti, V, Cr, Zr, Nb, Mo, W. Specifically the binder also contains chromium carbide. The pref. compsn. by wt. is 3-75% (73) (a); 1-30% (3) (b); 2-30% (3) (c); 0.01-10% (1) (d); and 15-90% chromium carbide. Used as a binder for boron nitride or diamond tools employed e.g. in drilling rock; in the building industry; or in cutting or grinding hard non-metallic materials. The binder has the required harness and heat resistance necessary for such tools, e.g. for annular bits or borecrowns.
