The formation of a gas sample for deliverance to a flare point for atomic absorption spectroscopy or a measuring bowl, is controlled by the described appt. Inert gas enters along a conduit (10) to a branch point where it is directed along two paths (14) and (22) to an intermediate container (16). Regulable chokes (18) and (24) control gas flow in these pipes. Dosing of the gas in the chamber (16) by a reactive fluid takes place by flushing a sealed reservoir (30) with gas from conduit (14) by control of an isolator valve (20). Expanding gases pass to further processing stages through a controlled valve (40) while a pressure relief valve (36) dumps excess gas.
