Plaque-staining agent (I) pref. has a short staining time and may be designed to produce different staining reactions on plaque layers of different age. The pH of (I) should be substantially the same as that of the rest of the toothpaste compsn. Use of the toothpaste permits daily monitoring of plaque formation without the need to dissolve tablets, etc.
