The control plate (5) forming lines and spaces for a gas discharge display device has horizontal line conductors (1) on one side and vertical gap conductors (2) on the other side. The plate can be of glass, and has a pattern of holes through it, in the form of horizontal slots (3) forming between them the pattern of line conductors, and vertical slots (4) in line with the space conductors. The conductors form the control electrodes, and the control openings are formed only at the overlapping points of the two sets of slots. The length of the regions between the horizontal slots is about half the length of the slots themselves. Each horizontal conductor consists of a matrix with three lines of horizontal slots, each offset from the slots above and below it. The height of a vertical slot is equal to the distance over the three rows of horizontal slots.
