An internal combustion engine operating with stratified charge has exhaust gas recirculated to reduce exhaust gas emission, as well as fuel consumption. A weak mixture is maintained in the main combustion chamber. Fuel injection gives a rich mixture in a connecting side combustion chamber. Under some operating condition current control methods result in emission and fuel consumption higher than values achieved without exhaust gas recirculation. The exhaust gas is recirculated only during full load operation, with a maximum exhaust gas recirculation of 10%.
