Retaining rails, on joint edges on both sides, provide mountings for overlapping bridging rails, mutually movable, one at least being a double rail with pieces holding the end of the opposite one between them, in provision for bridging an expansion joint esp. in car park buildings, large kitchens or breweries. One of the joint edges (3), at least, has a support rail (18) firmly clamped on it, with its upper side directly adjacent to the underside of at least one bridging rail. It is pref. on the same side of the joint (5) as the rail held by the double rail, and is pref. straight. Its underside may have a run-up slope (20) in the end area in the middle of the joint gap. Permeability by water is reduced to a min., and high loading is practicable.
