Coke oven door seal - with horizontal and stronger vertical springs acting on knife edge

A coke oven door for coke ovens of the horizontal chamber type is sealed against the door frame by a knife edge which is first adjusted roughly by hammer blows. Short thrust bars, held by hook bolts to the door periphery, contain horizontal spiral or disc springs which urge the knife edge against the door. Longer and stronger vertical spiral or disc springs act on a stem which urges the knife edge against the door frame. This ensures an automatic fine adjustment of the knife edge seal and a compensation for dimensional changes between door and door frame during the carbonizing period. The new seal can be subsequently added to existing doors.
