Per-fluoroalkyl-alkanol prepn. by hydrolysis of iodo-alkane - in presence of metal cation, phase-transfer catalyst and/or per-fluoroalkyl carboxylic acid anion
Perfluoroalkyl-alkanols, (I), are prepd. by perfluoroalkyl-iodoalkane, (II) hydrolysis in water, at 0-370 (50-250) deg.C, opt. under higher pressure and with the addn. of inert, water-immiscible solvents. Novelty consists in carrying out the reaction at pH 1-10 (1-6) in the presence of (1) at least 1 metal cation forming an iodide which is stable at the reaction temp. and dissolves in water to an extent no higher than 0.1 wt.%, w.r.t. aq. soln., combined with (2) at least 1 standard phase-transfer catalyst, (A) and/or at least 1 2-12C perfluoroalkyl-carboxylic acid anion (B). (I), esp. the perfluoroalkyl-ethanols, are used as intermediates for the prepn. of water-, oil- and/or dirt- repellent textile finishes. E.g. the alkanols are converted to their esters with unsaturated carboxylic acids, e.g. (meth)acrylic acid, and the cpds. obtd. are polymerised. (I) are obtd. from (II) with good selectivity, in yields exceeding 96-99%.
