A machine for trimming asparagus comprises horizontal arms in spaced pairs on which trimming blades are mounted. The blade arms are pivotally mounted so that they can be moved apart against spring loading. The machine now comprises a support table which moves the trimming heads horizontally towards and away from the asparagus. A vertically reciprocable frame can move up and down a set of coned cam pieces, each cam piece operation as a wedge between a pair of blade arms. The cam piece movements, which open and close the blade arms, are synchronised with the horizontal reciprocation of the table to obtain a trimming action.
