Wear resistant components for mixing or milling plant - esp. rollers or balls, which are coated with titanium contg. specific amts. of oxygen and nitrogen

The components consist of a substrate with a coating of Ti or a Ti alloy contg. in atomic %, 0.5-15, esp. 2-10% oxygen, and 0.03-7.5, esp. 1-6% nitrogen, both gases being dissolved in the Ti as alloying elements. The ratio of oxygen:nitrogen in the coating is pref. 2:1; and the coating may only be used on part of the surface of the substrate. The substrate may consist of Ti or a Ti alloy. The pref. mfg. method consists of coating a substrate with Ti or a Ti alloy and heating 0.5-100 hrs. at 450-1600 deg.C in an atmos. contg. 1-50 ppm O2 + N2. Used e.g. in the mfr. of balls or rollers which reduce milling and mixing times in the ceramic or metallurgical industries, and where the balls or rollers have very long life.
