The liq. in a treatment tank is recycled at high speed through a heating tank, in which the liq. is kept at a constant height by an overflow weir; and the lower part of a gas burner is immersed in the liq. in tank. The liq. in tank is pref. replaced ca.100 times/hour, and its temp. is only raised by ca. 5 deg.C. The burner is pref. surrounded by a skirt used to remove the combustion gases from the liq.; and tank pref. includes a chimney for removing such gases. The burner has a vertical axis, and is pref. immersed to a depth of 30 cm in the liq. The use of an indirect heat exchanger, which has extremely low thermal efficiency,can be eliminated.
