PURPOSE:To minimize the evaporation of Mn from a hydrogen storing alloy and the formation of an oxide film by sealing the alloy in a heat treating furnace with an inert gas kept under the vapor pressure of Mn or above and heat-treating the alloy at the m.p. or below. CONSTITUTION:A hydrogen storing Ti-Mn alloy is put in a vessel and set in a heat treating furnace. While carrying out degassing, the temp. is raised to remove gaseous oxygen in the furnace and oxygen adsorbed on the alloy. The temp. is then raised while allowing an inert gas alone or an inert gas contg. gaseous hydrogen to flow, the gas is kept under the vapor pressure of Mn or above, and the flow of the atmospheric gas is stopped to heat treat the alloy at the m.p. or below. By this treatment the oxidation of the alloy surface and the evaporation of Mn are inhibited. The alloy treated by this method begins to be hydrogenated in a short time and completes the occlusion of hydrogen in a short time, and it has superior releasing characteristics.
