The 2-methoxyphenoxyacetate of the phthalidyl ester of 6- D(-)-alpha-aminophenylacetamido)penicillanic acid of formula (I) is new (I) is a stable white powder which readily lends itself to formation of pharmaceutical tablets and powders (e.g. for preparing oral syrups). Unlike the hydrochloride it does not have a bitter taste (and so tablets need not be coated) and it is well absorbed to give high blood levels of ampicillin. (I) is used in unit doses of 20-1000 mg., esp. 160, 320 or 480 mg (corresp. to doses of 125, 250 or 375 mg of the hydrochloride) for treatment of infections caused by microorganisms sensitive to ampicillin.
