Polymer buildup on reactor surfaces during suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride is greatly reduced by a method wherein a mixture of dithiooxamide and alumina is used to coat reactor surfaces in contact with the reaction medium prior to carrying out the polymerization, and wherein the reactor surfaces to be coated with said mixture are periodically rinsed with a solution of an alkali metal hydroxide prior to said coating to obtain a synergistic increase in the effectiveness of the coating.
