ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREIn the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel radioactivetritium is formed among other by products. Elemental tritium and/or tritium hydride can be stored without control provided thatthe generated heat is dissipated. To concentrated and separatetritium and/or tritium hydride, the tritium water obtained in thereprocessing of spent nuclear fuel is enriched with tritiumhydroxide and di-tritium oxide, for example by distillation andthe mixture obtained is subjected to electrolysis, to converttritium hydroxide and di-tritium oxide into tritium and/or tritiumhydride. Conversion of the tritium in the tritium water intoeither elemental tritium or tritium hydride overcomes the storageproblems encountered with tritium water.
