ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA method and apparatus for sealing the drive endof a chamber for the preparation and hydrogenation of coalwith hydrogen to form hydrocarbons in which the chambercomprises a hollow cylinder with a rotatable element there-in having a conveying web thereon and in a sealing regiona pressurised sealing substance such as coal particlesmixed with oil is fed from a storage container through afeed passage into an annular recess at a pressure higherthan that in the chamber so that the sealing substancepasses through a conical annular gap which tapers towardsthe chamber. A further narrower gap on the drive side ofthe recess leads to a further annular recess from whichthe sealing substance can be extracted through a returnpipe. Pressure comparison means control the feed pressurein the feed passage. The recesses and the annular gap canbe provided by machining the rotatable element rather thanthe hollow cylinder and forward feed screw forms may beprovided on the rotatable element in the sealing region.
