The multi-mode optical fibres are so arranged on one side that the envelope modes, energised during coupling can be converted into core modes useful for the system. Pref. the fibres are tapered in such manner as to form a linear thicknessing in the outgoing direction. The incoming fibres may be also tapered. If the multi-mode fibres are used for an optical coupling and/or decoupling branch with fibre axes offsetting, all fibres are tapered on one side. In the production process heat, sufficient for melting is supplied axial symmetrically to a small fibre region. Then the fibre ends are uniformly pulled apart. Over the profile of the applied heat and the extension of the fibre angle and cross section a central separation is provided at the narrower part of the angular section. The optical branching components are pref. used in optical communications system.
