The two coupling halves (14), each have two or more flat inclined surfaces (16-27), in facing pairs, which enclose intermediate spaces (34). The spaces contain slide wedges (42-47), with flat opposite surfaces, and the wedges engage on a ring-shaped retainer (98). In at least one of the spaces, one or more of the four engage surfaces (two surfaces on the coupling halves, two on the slide wedge), is charged by a spring element (95) in a direction towards that surface, on which it engages. The element may charge a surface, which may be pivoted about axis (68), extending parallel to the surface, on which the first one engages.
