Method for producing water for the water injection system of a hydrogen-consuming internal combustion engine

In the operation of internal combustion engines using hydrogen, under certain operating conditions water is added to the air-hydrogen mixture to be burnt. This water is generally obtained from the exhaust gases by condensation. At times, however, the quantity of water thus producible is not sufficient. The carrying of a supply of water must be ruled out owing to the risk of frost in winter. In accordance with the invention an additional quantity of water is obtained at the time it is required by evaporating water from a solution containing antifreeze and condensing the water vapour. The engine cooling water is expediently used as the solution containing antifreeze. Any excess of water produced in the condensation of water from the exhaust gases can be used for re-establishing the original water concentration of the solution containing antifreeze.
