The monitoring system has a light guide and an opto-electronic receiver connected to a device that indicates the operating condition of the X-ray tube or that controls the heating and/or h.v. circuit of the tube. A first light-conducting path connects the heating filament (1) of the cathode to at least one reflecting surface (4) on the rotary anode (2). A second light-conductor path connects the reflecting surface to the opto-electronic receiver. The two light-conductor paths form a Y-shaped light conductor. The light conductor and the receiver are located inside the X-ray tube's casing. The receiver can be a phototransistor.
