Scintillator formed by engraving in relief - using column network on support and evaporating scintillator material onto support between 300 and 350 degrees centigrade
A scintillator is formed by engraving in relief on an aluminium support a network of columns regularly spaced and evaporating in a vacuum at a temperature of 300 to 350 deg.C. a scintillator material such as caesium iodide or sodium iodide onto the support. The interstices formed between the columns are then filled using an anhydrous oil (14) which protects the columns from humidity. The oil has an optical index such that light tends to remain imprisoned in the scintillator material. The scintillator may be used in e.g. an Auger camera or image intensifier tube and reduces lateral photon diffusion to provide a better image definition.
